NSBE HP Celebrates Black History Month at The Ion

Updated: Mar 10, 2022

On February 22, 2022, NSBE Houston Professionals (HP) celebrated the current Black history of two Black engineering administrators and two Black engineering professors at Rice University.

Provost Dr. Reginald DesRoches was recognized for being the first Black Engineer to be selected as President-Elect of Rice University then provided an inspirational acceptance speech focused on Black Excellence and Engineering Leadership.

Vice Provost Dr. Fred Higgs was recognized for successfully developing the Rice Center for Engineering Leadership (RCEL) then shared insights on the newly created Master of Engineering Management & Leadership (MEML) Program.

NSBE Houston was pleased to conduct this Black History Month Social at The Ion in Midtown Houston in affiliation with the "BlackStreet - Celebrating Black Innovation" week of events. Our chapter members enjoyed food and drinks catered by Hungry's Rice Village in the impressively remodeled venue that used to be a Sears Department Store.

There were over 100 RSVPs for this magnificent event and we were joined by members of NSBE NASA/Space City as well as SHPE Houston Professionals. RCEL sponsored this historical event, participants included RCEL Lecturer Dr. Uyiosa Abusomwan, and it was facilitated by NSBE President Dr. Joshua Gray.
