James Smalls

System Manager, Retail Solutions, Hewlett-Packard

James Smalls is a Senior System Manager for the Retail Solutions Business Unit in the Personal Systems. Strategy and Solutions Organization at HP Inc. Mr. Smalls has over 15 years of experience leading global program teams at Dell Computer Corp, NASA / SAIC and HP Inc.
 

While at NASA / SAIC, Mr. Smalls’ leadership experience included being Shift Lead for the Safety & Mission Assurance (S&MA) Console in Mission Control for over 10 Space Shuttle missions to the International Space Station (ISS), ISS S&MA Flight Lead for European Space Agency (ESA) Autonomous
Transfer Vehicle (ATV) and then supervisor of ISS S&MA Flight Leads for three other international, autonomous, visiting supply vehicles (JAXA HTV, Orbital Cygnus and SpaceX Dragon).

 

In terms of international business experience, as a Global Leadership graduate student in the Executive MBA Program at the Bauer College of Business (University of Houston), Mr. Smalls studied international business in Munich, Germany and Prague, Czech Republic. For NASA / SAIC he conducted international business in Toulouse, France. For HP Inc. he has led international business meetings in Taipei, Taiwan; Shanghai, China and Pune, India.
 

Mr. Smalls has three patents filed with US Patent Office via HP Inc. and several other patent applications that were recognized by Dell & HP Inc. 
 

Mr. Smalls has created / presented technical posters along with his team members at HP Inc.’s Cool Team Summit 2014, HP Inc.’s Program Management Summit (2018) and International System Safety Conference (ISSC) 2010.
 

Mr. Smalls co-authored a technical paper “Verification and Implementation of Operations Safety Controls for Flight Missions” which was published and presented in the “Systems Engineering” track at the 2010 NSBE Aerospace Systems Conference (ASC) in Los Angeles, CA.
 

Mr. Smalls was a coordinator and subject matter expert for HP Inc’s multi-site celebration/web simulcast of the Space X Launch of the first HP Mobile Workstations to the International Space Station (ISS). While in Houston, TX Mr. Smalls answered live questions from HP Global Heads/General Managers
located in Ft. Collins, CO and Cape Canaveral, FL.

 

Mr. Smalls has also traveled and assisted in international missions with Children Having Access to Nutrition, Care & Education (C.H.A.N.C.E.) Global Initiative in Nairobi, Kenya.

ï‚· Former: Communications Director for NSBE Space SIG (Special Interest Group), “Outstanding Young Engineer in Aerospace” at NSBE Aerospace Sys. Conf. (ASC), Chapter President for Austin Alumni, Chapter President for Hampton University and Co-Founder / Vice-President for the Brooklyn Technical HS NSBE Jr. Chapter in 1994.
